Day 13 – Fruits Party

One of the best things about leaving Singapore is all the fresh fruits and veggies we pick up there. Living on cucumbers and cinnamon rolls for the past 13 days, I was so excited to see the arrival of melons in the morning. Not that I complain. We eat relatively well considering that we cannot buy food at most of the place we go.

There are two choices for free food. There are a couple bars, snack shops and restaurants where we can buy food, but for the most part our choices are the seated dining in Topaz, or the buffet style in Yacht Club.

Yacht Club is my favorite because I like being able to serve myself, and eating outside. Often, meals are the only time I can be outside while the sun is up. Yacht Club’s breakfasts never vary: orange slices, plain yogurt, muesli, orange juice, somewhat questionable milk, sliced bologna, sliced cheese (think Kraft), bread and cinnamon rolls. Lunch is usually pizza, some kind of stir fry, and potatoes, and at the salad bar you have sliced cucumbers, lettuce, sliced onions, sliced tomatoes, and two kinds of dressings. Dinner is usually some kind of rice bowl, or Japanese curry with the same salad bar.

Topaz is a lot nicer, but because it is seated dining, it often takes longer, and there it is semi difficult to get extras of things you like or skip a course. Breakfast has two options, Japanese; miso soup, rice, natto, fish, egg, or Western; bacon/sausage, some kind of egg, pancake/toast, and apple slices. Lunch changes daily and is usually at least four courses. Dinner is usually five courses starting with an interesting range of “salads,” some kind of soup, a fish or meat option, bread and dessert. It is often pretty good, but sometimes you just can’t win. Topaz, too, offers the added bonus of theme nights, such as Vietnamese night, or Indian Curry night. Still, our limitations I getting fresh fruits and dairy makes me run for restaurants in port. Singapore, however, is where we grocery shop for the majority of the voyage. To celebrate our bounty, the chef threw a Fruit Party, a tropical extravaganza both a feast for the belly and the eyes.

For a mere $10USD, you could enjoy Dragon fruit, Papaya, Mango, Loquats, Star fruit, Plums, Pineapple, Litchi, Guava, Durian, and much, much more. My favorite part was the fresh coconut milk. The Jamaican Knife Guys would slice one open right in front of you and serve it with a straw. It was so delicious, and when you were finished, you could have them split the coconut in half so you could spoon out the flesh. I have always loved coconut, but I had no idea that fresh coconut could be so creamy. It was practically custard. INCREDIBLE! I could have eaten 100 coconuts.
