Day 43 - Greece

Okay, so I definitely stopped in Greece, as my passport will attest, but with only nine hours allowed off the boat I decided that rather trying to run around seeing the sights like a chicken with its head cut off I would try to relax and enjoy a day off.

My tour was called “Organic Living and Yoga Experience in a Greek Country,” and was absolutely perfect. I didn’t see the Parthenon, the Acropolis, or any of the Olympic monuments, but I had the most amazing day. It started off a little rocky, being stuck in morning traffic, a phenomenon that seems more foreign than all of Europe these days, but as soon as we arrived at our destination, the Sunshine House, I knew I made the right choice.

The morning began with a organic Greek cooking class where I learned how to make Tzatziki, Baked Pumpkin, Stuffed Peppers, Bean Salad, Greek Salad, and much more, and was followed with the best Yoga class I have ever had. The teacher really went into depth about the origins and meanings of each of the movement, and each pose was focused on alignment of the self, rather than any kind of physical benefit. We spent a lot of time just trying to center ourselves and at the end we finished in a horizontal position that left me in the most perfect state somewhere between awake and sleep.

After our yoga class we proceeded to a steam bath, similar to a sauna and alternated between an herbal steam room and a salt bath. If that wasn’t enough, we all enjoyed Thai massages while sitting on the grass under a tree with just the lightest breeze sweeping across our skin.

Lunch was incredible. I don’t know if it is because I have been enduring boat food for the last 40 days, or if it was because it was all organic, but it was the most delicious, filling, light cuisine I have ever had. I know I ate a lot, and while I felt full I didn’t fill heavy or weighed down as I would have expected. Rather I felt energized and completely content.

With the last couple of hours we sat around barefoot on the lawn, watched some Greek traditional dances, played with kittens and a puppy, ate fruit, drank local wine, and all in all soaked up the sunshine and good vibes. Upon returning to the boat I felt so at ease that when I lay down on my bed I felt like I could have melted right into the covers. It was heavenly.
